Make Concrete Blocks--How To Mix Concrete Properly
Making good concrete requires careful attention to correct procedures. A chemical reaction takes place when Portland cement is mixed with water. The cement reacts with the water to form crystals. The concrete does not simply dry and harden. An actual chemical process is involved. These cement crystals bind the materials in the concrete mixture together and will harden to form an extremely strong rock hard mass.
Time and the correct temperature is necessary to form the best crystals in the cement. Should the temperature be very low the cement crystals will not form properly or will form only very slowly. The concrete will be slow to dry,and harden, and will not have the strength of concrete formed in the correct temperature range.
When concrete blocks or other concrete items are manufactured the temperature should remain above 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Centigrade) and ideally should be above 50 degrees (10 degrees Centigrade). Under these conditions the cement crystals will form properly and bind the concrete mixture strongly together.
The expression "curing concrete" is often heard. This means the process which is required for the concrete to bond properly after it has been mixed with water. In other words this is the process needed for the concrete to reach maximum hardness.
The outer surface of the concrete must be kept damp during curing or the outermost layer of the concrete product will not harden well and might crumble. This is why concrete must be sprayed down with water while curing. The surface of the concrete must be kept damp for good curing.
The strength of the concrete product is dependent on on the growth of the crystals within the concrete mix. If the crystals do not form well as a result of the addition of the wrong amount of water,or because the temperature is too low,the concrete will not be as strong as it should be.
You will require your concrete products to withstand a wide range of weather and temperatures. To be successful in this you must have optimum crystal growth in the concrete mix.
For really good crystal growth you absolutely must have the correct amount of water in the concrete mixture. Should there not be enough water crystals will not grow well. If the temperature is too low the crystals will not grow well either. If the temperature is very high the crystals will grow quickly and the resulting chemical reaction will produce heat which may cause cracking of the concrete.
With the optimum amount of water in the mixture the crystals grow as they should and bond the concrete thoroughly by intertwining around the sand and gravel particles. When you are making concrete items you require the curing to take place as quickly as possible so that the products can be delivered to the customer. This will be best achieved by use of the correct concrete mix with the right amount of water added. In addition to this the concrete surface must be kept wet and the temperature must be above 40 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Centigrade).
Another factor which determines the strength and hardness of the finished concrete product is proper mixing of the ingredients. If the ingredients are not thoroughly mixed there will be differing degrees of hardness in various parts of the finished product. Needless to say this is something to avoid at all costs.
The dry ingredients of the concrete mix should be thoroughly mixed before adding water. This is particularly true if you are mixing the concrete by hand on the ground. You should very thoroughly combine all the ingredients of the mix into a homogenous mixture before adding the water. Using a mechanical concrete mixer helps to make sure that the concrete is thoroughly combined before pouring.
You can start your own concrete products business part time from home. Very little cash investment is needed. You can also easily build your own concrete block making machine from auto parts and sheet metal. With this machine you can manufacture 800 blocks per day. Plans for hand molds and for this machine are readily available.
