How can I use the internet to talk on the phone?
QualityBooks.com

Technology in the past few years has changed the way people communicate with each other by either introducing new devices, or modifying the way existing devices are being used. A new technology called VOIP, an acronym for Voice Over Internet Protocol is now modifying the way phone calls are being made. We are going to look at some things you will need to use the internet to talk phone such as a reliable broadband connection, voip service provider, phone adapter, LNP (Local Number Portability).

Voip is a technology that allows you to make phone calls over the internet through a broadband connection. The traditional phone companies that now exist use an expensive public telephone network. Using special adapters your audio phone call is converted to data and transferred over the internet until it is converted to audio on the receiving end so the person on the receiving end can hear your voice. So essentially you are routing your calls through a network that uses fewer resources and is a whole lot cheaper.

You will need a broadband internet service in operation that remains on and stable as long as you expect to talk on the phone. Any modems, routers, and connecting wiring should be in good working condition also. Any glitches there can cause an interruption in your phone service also.

Skype, which started out as a totally free service, seems to be leading the pack of voip providers. Starting in January 2007 Skype started charging a fee of $29.95. This fee includes calling unlimited anywhere in the U.S. and Canada. However computer to computer calls world wide would remain free. A headset mic setup would be needed to talk/hear. After downloading the software there is an easy configuration and signup. You can start making calls immediately after the setup.

There are plenty of new providers appearing on the market competing for your business. You may want to shop around and compare their services. Some offer software specific to their service. Some allow you to use a traditional phones, and others offer options in phone adapters for their service. Some of the top ones are Vonage, ViaTalk, and Voip.cm.

Some services allow you to use an online used id to make calls, whereas some require a phone number including area code. LNP (Local Number Portability) is available in case you want to keep your existing phone number and move it to your new service. This convenience helps you retain continuity burdened with changing all of your contact information.

The full impact of voip is yet to be seen but right now millions are acquiring and using these services. Making phone calls using the internet is cheap and efficient.
