THE PLOT : "Sheriff Jim (Ed Cassidy) needs help and calls his Texas Ranger pal Jeff (Johnny Mack Brown) to town. Jeff arrives, only to learn about a series of murders including that of the sheriff. The law is paralyzed and the town falls in the hands of a gang of outlaws, headed by manipulative Clay Wheeler (Ted Adams). Jeff quickly slips into the role of a quick-witted investigator and has Clay Wheeler in his sights but needs some solid evidence to pin the culprit. Will succeed in proving Clay’s guilt and free the town from his evil clutches?."

While the narrative revolves around a plot that is easy for anybody to figure out with a little effort, it is Johnny’s charisma that undoubtedly carries the narrative, but not without the endearing effort of Ted Adams. Take away Ted’s contribution and you have a narrative without pep or fizz. As mentioned earlier, the plot is typical of westerns from the 30s and has the Texas Ranger investigate a spate of murders. Predictably, the culprit stands out in a crowd, but it is up to the good guy to gather enough evidence to book him. Director Albert Ray adds to the intrigue by throwing in two female characters, both charming and both gunning for the ranger. Yes, the good guy wins, but not before thrilling audiences with his undeniable charm, wit and agility. We have many die-hard Johnny Mack Brown fans in our club and there was a near riot last week when it was announced that we would be viewing one of his classic Movies on DVD.
